Chinese Broccoli with Garlic Oyster Sauce

A quick and delicious Chinese-style side dish featuring tender-crisp Gai Lan (Chinese broccoli) coated in a flavorful garlic oyster sauce. Perfect alongside rice and your favorite protein!


Ingredients

For the Sauce:

  • 3 tablespoons oyster sauce

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

  • 1 tablespoon Chinese cooking wine (Shaoxing wine) or mirin

For the Stir-Fry:

  • 1 tablespoon peanut oil (or vegetable oil)

  • 2 tablespoons garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced

  • 1 bunch Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan), tough ends trimmed

  • 6 tablespoons water (divided)


Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Sauce

In a small bowl, mix together:
βœ… Oyster sauce
βœ… Sugar
βœ… Sesame oil
βœ… Chinese cooking wine (or mirin)

Set aside.


Step 2: Cook the Chinese Broccoli

  1. Heat 3 tablespoons of water in a large pan or wok over medium-high heat.

  2. Add Chinese broccoli (Gai Lan), cover with a lid, and steam for 2-3 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp.

  3. Remove from the pan and set aside.


Step 3: Sauté the Aromatics

  1. In the same pan, heat 1 tablespoon of peanut oil over medium heat.

  2. Add minced garlic and ginger, stirring constantly for 30 seconds until fragrant.


Step 4: Add the Sauce & Finish

  1. Pour in the prepared oyster sauce mixture and the remaining 3 tablespoons of water.

  2. Stir well and let the sauce simmer for 1-2 minutes until slightly thickened.


Step 5: Combine & Serve

  1. Pour the sauce over the steamed Chinese broccoli.

  2. Serve immediately as a side dish with steamed rice and your favorite protein.
