Spicy Shakshuka (Poached Eggs in Tomato Sauce)


A rich, flavorful Middle Eastern-inspired dish perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner!


๐Ÿ›’ Ingredients:

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 1 bell pepper, chopped

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp ground cumin

  • ½ tsp chili flakes (optional, for heat)

  • ½ tsp salt

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley or green onions (for garnish)

  1. Sauté the Vegetables:

    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

    • Add diced onion and bell pepper, cooking for 4–5 minutes until softened.

    • Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. Add Spices and Tomatoes:

    • Stir in paprika, cumin, chili flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.

    • Pour in the crushed tomatoes and mix well.

    • Let the sauce simmer gently for 10–15 minutes, uncovered, until it thickens slightly.

  3. Poach the Eggs:

    • Make small wells in the sauce using a spoon and crack an egg into each well.

    • Cover the skillet with a lid and simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until egg whites are set and yolks are still a bit runny (or to your preference).

  4. Garnish & Serve:

    • Remove from heat and sprinkle with fresh parsley or chopped green onions.

    • Serve hot with crusty bread, pita, or over rice.


Tip: For extra richness, add a few crumbles of feta cheese before covering the pan!
