How To Make Quick & Easy Sweet and Sour Chicken

Crispy chicken, juicy pineapple, and a glossy sweet-tangy sauce come together in this classic favorite. It’s better than takeout, easy to make,

Ingredients

For the Chicken

  • 1½ lbs boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into bite-size pieces

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ cup cornstarch

  • 2 large eggs, beaten

  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Sweet & Sour Sauce

  • ½ cup ketchup

  • ⅓ cup rice vinegar (or white vinegar)

  • ½ cup sugar

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

  • ½ cup pineapple juice (from the can)

For the Stir-Fry

  • 1½ cups pineapple chunks (fresh or canned, drained)

  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped

  • 1 small onion, chunked

Instructions

1. Prepare the Chicken

  • Season chicken with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

  • Coat each piece in cornstarch, then dip into beaten eggs.

2. Fry the Chicken

  • Heat oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).

  • Fry chicken in batches for 4–5 minutes, until golden and crispy.

  • Remove and drain on paper towels.

3. Make the Sauce

  • In a bowl, whisk together ketchup, vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, cornstarch, and pineapple juice until smooth. Set aside.

4. Stir-Fry the Vegetables

  • In a large pan or wok, add a small amount of oil.

  • Sauté bell peppers and onion over medium-high heat for 2–3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.

  • Add pineapple chunks and cook for another 1 minute.

5. Combine Everything

  • Pour the sauce into the pan with the vegetables.

  • Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and becomes glossy.

  • Add the crispy chicken and gently toss until fully coated.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve hot over steamed white rice or fried rice

  • Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions

  • Pair with egg rolls or stir-fried vegetables
