Cheesy Salisbury Steak with Brown Gravy

Cheesy Salisbury Steak with Brown Gravy

Description

This dish features juicy, pan-seared beef patties simmered in a rich brown gravy, then finished with melted cheese on top. It’s comfort food at its best—savory, tender, and perfect when served with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Ingredients (Serves 3–4)

For the Beef Patties

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 for best juiciness)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs or crushed crackers

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/4 cup milk

  • 1 small onion, finely minced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

For the Gravy

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth (warm)

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp soy sauce (optional, for depth)

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Topping

  • 3–4 slices cheddar cheese (or American cheese)

  • Dried parsley or thyme for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Patties

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, paprika, and onion powder.

  2. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix, or the patties will be tough.

  3. Divide the mixture into 3–4 portions and shape into oval or round patties about 1 inch thick.

Step 2: Sear the Patties

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

  2. Add a small amount of oil.

  3. Sear the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side until a deep brown crust forms.

  4. Remove patties from the skillet and set aside. They do not need to be fully cooked yet.

Step 3: Make the Gravy

  1. Reduce heat to medium and add butter to the same skillet.

  2. Once melted, whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.

  3. Slowly pour in beef broth while whisking constantly to avoid lumps.

  4. Add Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce.

  5. Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4: Simmer the Patties

  1. Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

  2. Spoon gravy over the tops.

  3. Cover and simmer on low heat for 8–10 minutes, until the patties are fully cooked and tender.

Step 5: Add Cheese

  1. Place a slice of cheese on each patty.

  2. Cover the skillet and let sit for 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts completely.

Serving Suggestions

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Steamed rice

  • Buttered green beans or peas

  • Roasted carrots

Spoon extra gravy over everything before serving.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for maximum flavor and moisture.

  • Finely mince the onion so it melts into the meat.

  • Warm the broth before adding it to the roux for a smoother gravy.

  • If gravy gets too thick, add a splash of broth or water.
