Ingredients You’ll Need

The secret to this dish’s success lies in its simple yet high-quality ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

For the Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (low-sodium preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (mixed with 2 tablespoons water for thickening)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger

For the Lo Mein:

  • 8 oz lo mein noodles (or spaghetti as a substitute)
  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin (thinly sliced against the grain)
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (divided)
  • Optional garnish : Sesame seeds, chopped green onions, or red pepper flakes

Step-by-Step Instructions

Ready to create this flavor-packed dish? Follow these easy steps:

Step 1: Cook the Noodles

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the lo mein noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside. If using spaghetti, cook until just tender.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce

In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, brown sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Set aside.

Step 3: Stir-Fry the Beef

Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced beef and cook for 2–3 minutes, or until browned but not fully cooked through. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.

Step 4: Cook the Broccoli

In the same skillet, add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 3–4 minutes, or until tender-crisp. If needed, add a splash of water to help steam the broccoli.

Step 5: Combine Everything

Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the broccoli. Pour the prepared sauce over the mixture and stir to combine. Add the cornstarch slurry and cook for 1–2 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and coats the beef and broccoli.

Step 6: Toss with Noodles

Add the cooked lo mein noodles to the skillet and toss everything together until the noodles are evenly coated with the sauce. Cook for an additional 1–2 minutes to heat through.

Step 7: Garnish and Serve

Transfer the Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein to serving plates or bowls. Garnish with sesame seeds, chopped green onions, or red pepper flakes for added flavor and presentation. Serve hot and enjoy!
