Liam finally lowered his phone. The adrenaline was leaving his small body, and his hands began to shake violently. He dropped to his knees beside his sister, wrapping his arms around her waist, burying his face in her side. Chloe let go of Noah just enough to wrap one arm tightly around Liam, pulling both her boys against her chest.

The Sergeant turned to Liam. "Son, I need to see that video."

Liam wiped his nose and handed the phone over. The Sergeant watched the footage. He watched the real thief. He watched the manager profile Chloe. He closed his eyes and let out a long, heavy sigh.

"Call an ambulance for the mother," the Sergeant barked at the younger officer. "And Miller, take off your gear. Go sit in the back of my cruiser. You are done for the day. We are having a very long talk with Internal Affairs."

The Sergeant walked over to the ambulance before they closed the doors. He looked deeply ashamed. "Ma'am... I don't have the words to apologize for what happened to you today. It was a failure on every level. We will be visiting that pharmacy, and we will be reviewing Officer Miller's conduct."

Chloe looked at him, her eyes red and swollen, but blazing with a new, protective fire. "An apology doesn't fix this," she whispered, her voice hoarse. "He traumatized my son. He traumatized my brother. I want his badge number. And I want a lawyer."
