Liam stood frozen on the sidewalk. He looked at his sister, broken and sobbing on the dirty ground. He looked at the officer, his face red and sweating, his grip too tight on Noah's small ribs. He looked at the baby, terrified, face purple from screaming.

Liam was ten years old. He was small for his age, quiet, and usually terrified of confrontation. But in that exact moment, watching the only family he had left being torn apart on a dirty sidewalk over a bottle of stolen formula they didn't even have, something inside him snapped. The fear vanished. It was instantly replaced by a profound, chilling focus.

Liam took his hands out of his pockets. He stepped off the curb.

He didn't yell. He didn't cry. He walked right into the space between his sister and the police officer. He didn't look at the hostile crowd. He didn't look at the younger cop who had his hand on his weapon. He walked to the exact center of the street, standing inches away from Officer Miller’s tactical boots.

Miller looked down at the boy, his expression twisting into a scowl. "Step back, kid."

Liam didn't move. Instead, he reached into the deep pocket of his cargo shorts.

The younger officer tensed, shouting, "Hey! Show your hands! Show your hands right now!"

But Liam wasn't pulling out a weapon. He pulled out an old, cracked smartphone. His thumb moved quickly across the shattered screen. He didn't point the camera at the cops to record them—the crowd was already doing that. Instead, he turned the brightness all the way up, held the phone high in the air directly facing Officer Miller, and pressed play on a video he had taken forty-five minutes earlier.

The audio from the phone was surprisingly loud, cutting through the baby's cries.
