"Miller," the younger officer said, his voice cracking with panic as the crowd closed in. "Miller, give the kid back. We messed up. We messed up bad."

Sirens wailed in the distance. The backup Miller had called for was arriving, but the situation had completely flipped. Two more cruisers screeched to a halt, and a Sergeant, an older man with graying hair, stepped out, immediately sensing the toxic hostility of the crowd.

"What the hell is going on here?" the Sergeant demanded, pushing his way through the wall of furious bystanders.

"They assaulted her!" a woman screamed, pointing at Miller. "The little boy has the real thief on video! These cops just attacked a mother for walking down the street!"

The Sergeant looked at Miller, who was still holding the crying baby, looking completely lost. Then he looked at Chloe, who was bleeding from her knees, her dress torn, hyperventilating on the hot concrete.

"Officer Miller, hand the child back to his mother. Now," the Sergeant ordered, his voice dangerously low.

Miller didn't argue. He slowly walked over to Chloe, dropping to one knee, and awkwardly held Noah out.

Chloe didn't wait. She practically tackled the officer, snatching Noah from his hands. She collapsed back against the brick wall, burying her face in her baby’s neck, sobbing with a mixture of profound relief and agonizing trauma. She rocked back and forth on the dirty pavement, whispering, "I've got you, I've got you, Mommy's got you."
