It wasn't a sustained wail, just a sharp, aggressive whoop-whoop that cut violently through the heavy summer air. A blue-and-white police cruiser swung dangerously fast around the corner, its tires scraping the concrete curb, and angled aggressively into the crosswalk, entirely blocking Chloe’s path.

Chloe stopped dead in her tracks. Her spine went rigid. Liam felt the immediate, terrifying shift in the air. The laughter from the teenagers died instantly. The talking stopped. The entire street seemed to hold its breath.

Two officers stepped out of the cruiser. They were large men, weighed down by thick tactical vests and heavy utility belts. The driver, a broad-shouldered officer with a shaved head and mirrored sunglasses, slammed his door shut with a metallic bang that made Liam flinch.

"Ma'am, hold it right there," Officer Miller said. His voice was flat, practiced, and carried absolutely zero warmth.

Chloe took a half-step back, instinctively pulling baby Noah tighter to her chest. "Is there a problem, officer?"

"I need to ask you a few questions. Put the bag on the ground, right now."

"Why?" Chloe’s voice trembled. Liam moved closer, his shoulder brushing her hip. "I'm just walking to the bus stop with my brother and my baby."

"We got a call about a shoplifter fitting your description down at the pharmacy on Main," Officer Miller said, taking a slow, predatory step forward. "White female, early twenties, yellow dress, carrying a large bag. Now put the bag on the ground."

"I haven't even been to the pharmacy!" Chloe’s voice rose in pitch. Pure fear was bleeding into her tone. "I just came from the St. Jude's clinic. I have the medical paperwork right here in my bag."
