He Called My Clothes Trash, So I Bought His Luxury Vault
Chapter 2
The air drained out of the room instantly.
Antoine froze mid-bow, every single drop of color draining from his face until he looked like a corpse. His hands shook so violently that his velvet presentation tray slipped from his fingers, crashing onto the marble floor with a sharp metallic clatter. "C-Chairman... Thorne?"
Chloe stumbled backward in her high heels, her designer dress catching on a glass display case as she clutched it to keep from collapsing. She stared at Damian in pure, unadulterated terror—realizing the man in the flannel shirt she had just mocked was the untouchable billionaire chairman who controlled half of Manhattan's commercial landscape.
Chadwick Preston’s arrogant smirk crumbled into ash. Cold sweat drenched his navy velvet blazer. Before he could utter a word, his smartphone blared violently on speaker in his pocket.
With trembling, numb fingers, Chadwick pulled out his phone. The caller ID showed his father's name—the CEO of Preston Logistics. He answered on speaker, his voice cracking into a panicked whine. "D-Dad?"
"Chadwick, you brainless, arrogant fool, what did you just do?!" his father screamed frantically through the speaker, his hysterical voice echoing across the silent vault. "Thorne Global just canceled our hundred-million-dollar shipping contract and initiated a massive short on our stock! Our shares are plummeting eighty percent in pre-market trading! Preston Logistics is going into bankruptcy by sunset if you don't fix this!"
The call disconnected with a sharp beep. Chadwick stared at the black screen, his knees buckling beneath him as he collapsed onto the marble floor—landing right on top of the cash he had slapped against Damian's chest moments earlier.
Damian casually wiped the coffee stain from his sleeve with the warm towel, then draped the dark cashmere coat over his shoulders, concealing the wet flannel completely.
He turned his cold, piercing dark eyes toward the three pale, trembling figures, a faint, dangerous smile playing on his lips.
"Now," Damian said softly, his quiet voice cutting through the dead silence like a blade. "Let's discuss who really doesn't belong in my vault."
Antoine dropped straight onto his knees on the marble floor, tears smearing his face as his trembling hands reached desperately toward the hem of Damian’s dark cashmere coat.
"Chairman Thorne! Please! I beg for your mercy!" Antoine sobbed, his voice echoing pathetically off the high vault ceilings. "I didn't know it was you! If I had known who you were—"
"That is your fundamental flaw, Antoine," Damian interrupted, his voice smooth, calm, and cold as ice. "You extend human decency only when you see a designer label or a multi-million-dollar price tag. Human dignity shouldn't depend on what someone wears. Julian, fire him immediately and ensure his name is blacklisted across every luxury house, auction gallery, and private vault in North America and Europe."
"No! Please! Chairman Thorne!" Antoine wept as two burly security operatives seized him under his arms and hauled him out onto Fifth Avenue, his frantic cries dying out in the city traffic.
The vault fell dead silent once more. Damian turned his cold, unyielding gaze toward Chadwick Preston, who was shaking uncontrollably on the floor, crawling forward on his hands and knees amidst his shattered pride.
"Damian... please!" Chadwick stammered, his hands clasped together in a desperate, trembling plea. "Look at me! It was a mistake! A horrible misunderstanding! We were roommates in college, remember? I helped you! Please don't destroy my father's life's work!"
Damian looked down at him with quiet, absolute detachment.
"In college, Chadwick, I lived simply and worked night shifts because I valued hard work over unearned arrogance," Damian said softly, his words cutting through the air like glass. "You mistook my humility for weakness, and today, your arrogance destroyed your family's future."
He looked up at Julian. "Proceed with the complete debt foreclosure on Preston Logistics. Leave nothing behind."
"Understood, Chairman," Julian replied with crisp, military efficiency.
Hearing her ticket to high society evaporate in real time, Chloe instantly took three steps away from Chadwick, her face contorting into pure hatred and disgust. "You pathetic, worthless loser! You destroyed your whole family's legacy in five minutes! Get away from me!"
Spinning around, Chloe forced a sweet, desperate smile, smoothed her dress, and took a delicate step toward Damian. She pressed a hand to her chest, her voice dropping into a soft, breathy purr.
"Chairman Thorne... I was completely misled by him. I had no idea he was such a jerk... perhaps I could buy you a drink to apologize?"
Damian didn't even glance in her direction. "Julian, remove this trash from my sight."
Two operatives immediately flanked Chloe, seizing her wrists and dragging her away as she shrieked in outrage. Chadwick remained slumped on the marble floor, weeping helplessly surrounded by his scattered hundred-dollar bills.
Damian turned his back on the ruined heir and walked toward the center display of Vault 1, where the breathtaking $15 million Grand Sovereign pocket watch rested on black velvet.
A timid nineteen-year-old watchmaking apprentice named Toby, who had been standing quietly in the corner holding a polishing cloth with utmost respect throughout the entire confrontation, stepped forward nervously.
"C-Chairman Thorne," Toby stammered, carefully unlocking the glass display and presenting the velvet box with extreme reverence. "Your grandfather's timepiece, sir."
Damian took the velvet box and offered the young man a warm, genuine smile. "You were the only one who didn't look down on me or sneer when I walked through those doors today, Toby."
Damian pulled a sleek black metallic executive card from his pocket and placed it firmly into Toby's trembling palm.
"As of today, Toby, you are the new Managing Director of Horlogerie Royale. You will receive a full executive salary package and a two percent profit share."
Toby stared down at the black card, tears of disbelief and gratitude welling in his eyes. "Chairman Thorne... thank you! I promise I will never let you down!"
"I know you won't," Damian replied, gently patting the young man's shoulder. "Always remember this day, Toby. Treat the man in the dusty boots with the exact same respect as the man in the tailored tuxedo."
Damian closed the velvet box containing the $15 million timepiece, wrapped his dark cashmere coat tighter around his shoulders, and walked out through the heavy bronze doors into the Manhattan sunlight—a quiet, untouchable titan who proved that true power never needs to boast, and true class is always timeless.
