My father stopped walking. He stood amidst the scattered juice boxes, the trampled birthday gifts, and the smeared remains of my son’s Spider-Man cake. He looked down at the ruined cake for a long, agonizing moment. I saw a muscle twitch in his jaw. When he finally looked up at Jenkins, his eyes were as cold as a winter night.

"My name is Samuel Hayes," my father said, his voice quiet but carrying the weight of a sledgehammer. "And I am going to need you to explain to me why you have drawn a lethal weapon on my son, in front of my grandson, on property that is legally owned by my family trust."

Jenkins blinked, momentarily thrown off by his vocabulary and calm demeanor, but her arrogance quickly recovered. "Your son is running an illegal ghetto circus! He’s resisting arrest! I don't care who you are, you're interfering with police business!"

Sergeant Miller scrambled forward, waving his hands frantically at Jenkins. "Jenkins, shut your mouth! Shut up right now!"

"Sarge, he's threatening me—"

"I said SHUT UP!" Miller roared, stepping between Jenkins and my father. The Sergeant turned to my father, literally sweating. "Judge Hayes, sir. I... I apologize. There has been a massive misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding, Sergeant Miller?" my father asked, setting his leather briefcase down on the only standing table left. "Let us examine this 'misunderstanding.' Ten minutes ago, my grandson was blowing out candles on his tenth birthday. Now, I arrive to find his cake in the dirt, my son held at gunpoint, and a junior officer barking racial slurs on a public street."

"Sir, she didn't—" Miller started to say, desperately trying to do damage control.

"She did," little Noah piped up from the side. Noah stepped forward, holding up a sleek smartphone. "I have recorded the entire incident from the moment she exited her vehicle, Sergeant. She explicitly called this a 'welfare party' and a 'ghetto circus' before physically assaulting the property and drawing her weapon without provocation. I also have the badge numbers of all arriving officers."

Sergeant Miller stared at the ten-year-old boy in a navy suit, absolutely dumbfounded.
