The word "boy" hung in the air like a physical slap. The blatant disrespect, the racism dripping from her tone—it took every ounce of my willpower not to react. I knew exactly what she wanted. She wanted me to raise my voice. She wanted me to give her an excuse.

Instead of answering her, I took a deep breath. "Officer, I own this home. It’s 2:00 PM on a Saturday. We are well within the noise ordinance, and this is a private family gathering. You are trespassing."

"Trespassing?" She let out a harsh, mocking laugh. "You think you can talk to me like that?"

Before I could say another word, she lunged forward. With a violent shove, she pushed the folding table. The metal legs buckled. The juice boxes went flying. The presents tumbled into the dirt. And the beautiful Spider-Man cake—the one Leo had been begging for—slid off the edge and smashed facedown into the grass, ruined.

Leo let out a heartbreaking sob. "Dad! My cake!"

I saw red. "What the hell is wrong with you?!" I yelled, finally losing my composure.

Her hand instantly dropped to her belt, unbuttoning the holster of her Taser. She took a step back, a terrifying, victorious smirk playing on her lips. "Back up right now, or you're going in cuffs. I knew you people couldn't stay civilized."

I was cornered in my own front yard, watching my son cry over his ruined birthday, staring down the barrel of a weapon. I couldn't believe what was about to happen...
