The Last Guardian: The Honor of Brothers
Chapter 1
The mountain pass at dusk was swallowed by a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the low, guttural rumble of a single 103-cubic-inch Twin Cam engine.
Clayton "Bear" Miller leaned his massive frame over the handlebars of his blacked-out Harley-Davidson. In his late thirties, Clayton looked like a man sculpted out of rough granite—broad-shouldered, with a graying beard, a weathered face carved by wind and asphalt, and eyes that carried the quiet weight of a violent past. On the leather vest hanging in his garage back home, the top rocker once read President of the Vanguard MC.
Tonight, he wore no patches. Just a plain, heavy leather jacket scarred by road rash.
It had been three long years since the night that shattered his world. Three years since a bloody turf war ambush cost him his road brother, Gabe. Clayton could still feel the cold rain of that night, still smell the copper tang of blood as he held Gabe on the muddy gravel. With his final, shuddering breath, Gabe had pressed a worn leather wallet into Clayton’s hands, whispering a desperate dying wish: "Take care of my little girl, Bear... Keep Mia away from this darkness..."
From that day forward, Clayton walked away from the throne. He stripped off his colors, handed leadership to his lieutenant, and retired to the quiet outskirts of the valley to run a modest auto repair shop. For three years, he lived like a ghost—working eighteen-hour days fixing rusted pickup trucks, quietly funneling every spare cent into a trust fund for seven-year-old Mia under the guise of an "anonymous family friend."
He had made a vow: Mia would grow up safe, clean, and loved, far removed from the blood and iron of his past.
Suddenly, the heavy silence inside Clayton’s helmet was broken by the sharp vibration of his phone mounted on the handlebars. He pulled off onto the gravel shoulder and tapped the screen. It was a call from the boarding school where Mia lived during the week.
"Mr. Miller?" a nurse's panicked voice came through the speaker above the roar of the wind. "It’s about Mia. She collapsed an hour ago with a dangerously high fever—over 104 degrees. She's delirious, crying for her father, and the local hospital says her airway is swelling. We need a legal guardian here immediately, but the storm is knocking out the main highway!"
Clayton’s heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer. The school was fifty miles away over the treacherous Devil's Spine Pass. A sudden mountain storm was rolling in, threatening to flood the roads and turn the tarmac into ice.
"I'm on my way," Clayton grunted, his gravelly voice tight with raw emotion. "Tell her... tell her Uncle Bear is coming."
He jammed his phone back into his pocket, kicked the Harley into gear, and pinned the throttle. The rear tire threw up a cloud of gravel as the heavy machine shot out onto the twisting highway. The sky opened up, pouring down a wall of icy freezing rain, but Clayton didn't care.
Gabe had died protecting his back. Tonight, Clayton would ride through hell itself to protect Gabe's daughter.
The sky turned pitch-black as torrential rain slammed into the asphalt, turning the mountain pass into a slippery, treacherous death trap. Water sheeted across Clayton's visor, blurring the white divider lines into smears of ghost-like silver. The freezing mountain wind howled through the towering pines, tearing at his leather jacket, but Clayton's grip on the heated handlebars remained ironclad.
Every tick of the clock was a knife in his chest. 104-degree fever. Swollen airway. The nurse’s voice echoed relentlessly inside his helmet.
As he rounded a sharp, unlit hairpin turn overlooking a four-hundred-foot ravine, four blinding halogen headlights suddenly ignited in the darkness ahead.
Four heavy custom cruisers swung out from a concealed logging trail, sweeping across both lanes to form a moving barricade. Clayton slammed on his rear brake, the back tire squirming violently against the slick asphalt before he brought the Harley under control mere feet from their front tires.
The bikes idling in front of him bore a terrifyingly familiar emblem stitched across their leather cuts: a spiked iron chain wrapped around a bleeding skull—the mark of the Red Vipers, the very syndicate responsible for Gabe’s death three years ago.
From the middle of the pack, a burly rider with a scarred face stepped off a stretched chopper, resting a heavy iron crowbar across his shoulder.
"Well, well... look what the storm dragged in," the man sneered, his gravelly voice amplified over his bike's PA system. "Clayton 'The Bear' Miller. The legendary President who ran away like a whipped dog."
"Move, Vance," Clayton growled, his voice low, heavy, and dangerous. He kept his engine revving, the twin-cylinder exhaust vibrating through the wet road. "I don't have time for this tonight."
"You think you can just walk away from the blood you spilled, Bear?" Vance cackled, his crew inching their machines closer, blocking every inch of the narrow pass. "You killed our captain’s brother during that raid. You owe a debt in blood, and tonight, on this dark mountain, nobody is coming to save you."
Clayton glanced at the digital clock on his dash. 1:15 AM. Mia was choking on her own fever miles away.
In his younger days, Clayton would have dismounted his bike, unholstered his wrench, and fought all four of them until the pavement was stained red. But tonight wasn't about his pride, his past, or his vengeance. Tonight was about a sacred promise made to a dying brother.
"I'm not asking again, Vance," Clayton said, his eyes narrowing into cold slits behind his helmet visor. "Get out of my way."
Vance raised the iron crowbar, a cruel smirk spreading across his face. "Kill him. Take his bike."
The three flanking Red Vipers cracked their throttles, launching forward to ram Clayton off the cliff edge.
Engines roared like furious beasts as the three Red Vipers closed in, their heavy iron bars swinging through the blinding rain.
Clayton didn't hesitate. Instead of pulling back or dismounting to fight, he kicked the transmission down into first gear and slammed the throttle wide open. The Harley’s rear tire bit into the wet asphalt, spitting a wall of water behind it as the heavy machine lunged directly into the narrow gap between Vance and the lead rider.
WHAM!
Clayton’s shoulder slammed violently into the lead rider's handlebars. Metal scraped against metal, throwing a blinding shower of yellow sparks into the rainy night. The force of the blow tore Clayton's leather jacket at the sleeve, slicing open his upper arm, but the rival rider lost his balance completely, his bike wobbling out of control before wiping out into the mud embankment.
"Get him!" Vance shrieked, swinging his heavy crowbar wildly.
The iron bar struck Clayton’s shoulder with a sickening CRACK. Pain flared through his collarbone like liquid fire, making his vision go white for a split second. But Clayton gritted his teeth, locked his knee against the fuel tank, and threw a devastating counter-elbow right through Vance’s helmet visor.
The plastic shattered. Vance gagged, recoiling backward off his seat as his bike crashed onto its side, skidding across the slick pavement.
