The heavy glass doors of Le Cachet, a world-renowned Michelin-starred restaurant in Manhattan, parted to reveal an atmosphere of golden light, shimmering crystal chandeliers, and gentle harp music.

Nathaniel Mercer stepped onto the hand-woven Italian carpet. His heavy leather work boots bore traces of drywall dust from inspecting Mercer Conglomerate’s newest skyscraper construction downtown. Clad in faded jeans and a plain white linen shirt, he looked more like a site contractor than the billionaire chairman controlling half the city’s real estate. In his hand, he carried a simple leather folder.

"Hold on right there," a sharp, condescending voice called out.

Claude, the restaurant’s head maître d', marched forward, arms crossed over his pristine tuxedo. He sneered, scanning Nathaniel from head to toe with open disdain. "Deliveries go around back to the service entrance. You can’t walk through the front lobby looking like a vagrant."

"I'm not delivering anything," Nathaniel said, his voice measured and calm. "I have a reservation for the private executive suite."

Claude let out a harsh, theatrical laugh. "An executive suite? Do you have any idea what a glass of spring water costs here? Look at your boots—you’re ruining our carpet. Leave before I have security drag you out to the alley."

Before Nathaniel could respond, the sharp click of designer heels echoed across the marble floor. Victoria swept into the lobby, her arm wrapped tightly around Richard Davenport, a pompous heir to a private equity fortune wearing a tailored Armani suit.

Victoria stopped dead in her tracks, her face twisting into a cruel smirk. "Nathaniel? Is that actually you?"

Nathaniel turned slowly, his dark eyes cool and unreadable. "Victoria. It’s been a while."

"Who’s the homeless guy, babe?" Richard asked, squeezing Victoria’s waist as he eyed Nathaniel with amusement. "Your handyman?"

"Oh, sweetie, no," Victoria giggled, leaning into Richard. "This is Nathaniel—my ex from college! The guy who worked three jobs just to buy me a cheap silver bracelet. Looks like four years haven't changed a thing. Still a broke nobody."

Richard chuckled arrogantly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a thick roll of hundred-dollar bills. "Hey, pal, I respect the struggle. Here’s five hundred bucks." He carelessly dropped the cash onto the carpet, right at Nathaniel's dusty boots. "Buy yourself a real shirt and get a burger down the street. Don't embarrass yourself here."

Claude bowed obsequiously toward Richard. "Mr. Davenport! Welcome back, sir. Your table is prepared. Apologies for this eyesore—I was just removing this beggar."

Nathaniel glanced down at the money on the floor, then raised his gaze to meet Richard’s. His expression was completely unbothered, carrying an intense, quiet authority.

"Keep your money, Richard," Nathaniel said softly. "You might need it sooner than you think. And Claude... your attitude is about to cost you far more than your job."

Richard’s face flushed red with sudden rage. "You arrogant little piece of trash! How dare you talk to me like that?!"

Grabbed by an impulse, Richard snatched a glass of full-bodied Pinot Noir from a passing waiter's tray and hurled it directly at Nathaniel’s chest. The dark red wine splashed across Nathaniel's shirt, soaking the fabric in a deep crimson stain.

Victoria gasped, then broke into high-pitched laughter. Claude smirked, signaling two towering security guards at the door. "Guards! Throw this trash out into the street!"

Nathaniel didn't flinch. He calmly wiped a drop of wine from his jaw with the back of his hand. Reaching into his jacket, he pulled out a custom titanium smartphone and hit a single speed-dial button.

"Lester," Nathaniel spoke into the phone, his voice cold enough to chill the room. "Did Mercer Conglomerate just finalize the acquisition of the Le Cachet dining group? ... Excellent. Bring the ownership deeds and my security detail down to the lobby. You have ninety seconds."

Nathaniel hung up, tucked his phone away, and looked at the three of them with a calm, terrifying smile.

Victoria and Richard exchanged a brief, confused look before bursting into laughter once more. Claude pointed at Nathaniel, shaking his head mockingly. "Acquisition?! Mercer Conglomerate?! You think you're Nathaniel Mercer, the billionaire owner? You’ve completely lost your mind! Guards, get him out!"

The two hulking security guards lunged forward, their thick gloved hands reaching out to grab Nathaniel by his wine-soaked collar. Claude stood behind them, arms folded over his tuxedo, a vindictive smirk twisted across his face.

"Throw him straight into the gutter where he belongs," Claude sneered.

Before the guards' fingers could touch Nathaniel, the ear-splitting screech of high-performance tires shattered the quiet elegance of the street outside. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass entrance, a convoy of four sleek, jet-black Rolls-Royce Phantoms screeched to a halt along the curb, their emergency lights flashing in terrifying unison.

The heavy glass doors snapped open. A tall man in a bespoke navy suit strode into the lobby, surrounded by six towering personal security operatives wearing dark sunglasses and ear pieces. It was Lester—the legendary chief executive assistant of Mercer Conglomerate, a man whose picture regularly graced the front covers of Wall Street Journal and Forbes.

Claude’s sneer instantly withered. Recognizing the high-profile titan, he scrambled forward, bowing frantically. "Mr. Lester! Welcome to Le Cachet, sir! We had no idea you were coming—"

Lester didn't even slow down. He brushed past Claude as if the head manager were made of thin air, marching with absolute purpose toward the man standing in dusty leather boots and a wine-stained shirt.

To the collective horror of everyone in the room, Lester stopped two paces in front of Nathaniel and bowed deeply from the waist.

"My sincerest apologies for the brief delay, Chairman Mercer," Lester said, his crisp voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. He gestured, and a guard immediately presented a warm, scented towel along with a plush Italian cashmere overcoat. "The emergency board meeting wrapped up five minutes ago. The acquisition paperwork for the Le Cachet dining group has been fully executed. You are now the sole owner of this restaurant, its parent corporation, and all real estate assets tied to its name."

Lester opened a leather binder, exposing official state deeds stamped with the gleaming gold crest of Mercer Conglomerate.

The air drained out of the room.
