The Billionaire Chairwoman Pretended to Be Penniless to Test Her Fiancé His Choice at the Wedding Changed Everything
Chapter 3
“For what?”
“For finally being honest.”
He seemed confused by how calm she was.
“I never wanted to hurt you.”
Victoria slipped the ring into her handbag.
“I know.”
A waiter entered the room.
Behind him came another woman.
Claire Whitmore.
Adrian’s face went white.
Claire stopped when she saw him.
“What are you doing here?”
Victoria turned toward her.
“Please. Sit.”
Claire looked between them.
“Who are you?”
Adrian immediately stood.
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
Victoria almost laughed.
She looked at Claire.
“Did he tell you he was engaged?”
Claire’s expression changed.
Adrian interrupted.
“Victoria, stop.”
Claire stared at him.
“Engaged?”
Victoria nodded.
“Until about thirty seconds ago.”
Claire slowly turned toward Adrian.
“You told me it was basically over.”
“It was complicated.”
“No,” Victoria said calmly. “It was dishonest.”
Adrian’s embarrassment became anger.
“You set this up?”
Victoria looked at him.
“No.”
She leaned back.
“You did.”
Claire grabbed her handbag.
“This is unbelievable.”
Adrian followed her toward the door.
“Claire, wait.”
She pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.”
Within seconds, both of them were gone.
Victoria remained alone.
The waiter stood awkwardly near the wall.
She looked at him.
“You can bring dinner.”
He nodded.
“For one?”
Victoria smiled.
“For one.”
The next morning, Adrian arrived at work exhausted and furious.
His relationship was over.
Claire was refusing his calls.
Victoria had blocked his number.
But at least, he told himself, his career remained intact.
And today might finally change everything.
Crownridge Holdings had summoned several division leaders to headquarters for a major executive restructuring.
Rumors suggested promotions.
Adrian believed he might be selected for a senior strategy position.
His mother had already told half the family.
“Forget that girl,” Margaret had said that morning. “This could be the beginning of the life you actually deserve.”
Adrian walked into Crownridge Tower wearing his best suit.
He had no idea Victoria had entered the same building two hours earlier.
No simple beige dress.
No inexpensive handbag.
No frightened unemployed woman.
Victoria stood before the mirror inside her private office while her assistant fastened a diamond necklace around her neck.
She wore an elegant champagne-gold couture suit embroidered with delicate metallic detailing. Her dark brown hair was swept into a refined updo, crowned with a subtle jeweled tiara-style headpiece reserved for the ceremonial board reception that afternoon.
Her assistant looked at her reflection.
“Are you ready?”
Victoria stared at herself.
“Yes.”
Across the building, Adrian entered the executive boardroom.
Twenty senior directors were already seated.
Margaret had been invited as a representative of one of the company’s external partners.
She sat near the back, glowing with pride.
Adrian smiled when he saw her.
Then the regional president entered.
Everyone stood.
“Ladies and gentlemen, before we begin, there has been an important change in today’s agenda.”
Adrian straightened his jacket.
The president continued.
“Our Chairwoman has decided to personally lead this meeting.”
Whispers spread around the room.
Adrian had never seen the legendary Chairwoman of Crownridge Holdings.
Very few employees had.
The double doors opened.
Every executive immediately rose.
Adrian turned.
And stopped breathing.
Victoria entered the room.
For several seconds, his mind refused to understand what his eyes were seeing.
Same face.
Same hazel-brown eyes.
Same dark hair.
But everything else was impossible.
Diamond jewelry.
Champagne-gold couture.
Executives lowering their heads respectfully as she passed.
Margaret slowly stood from her chair.
Her mouth fell open.
Victoria walked toward the head of the table.
She did not look at Adrian until she reached her seat.
The company president spoke clearly.
“Ladies and gentlemen, Chairwoman Victoria Crownridge.”
Adrian’s face drained of color.
Victoria finally looked directly at him.
No anger.
No sadness.
Only calm recognition.
She placed a folder on the table.
“Good morning.”
Nobody answered.
Victoria’s eyes remained on Adrian.
Then she smiled very slightly.
“I believe some of us have already met.”
And Adrian finally understood.
The woman he abandoned because he thought she had nothing had been the most powerful person in the room all along.
The boardroom remained completely silent.
Adrian stood beside his chair as though someone had pulled the floor out from beneath him. Margaret was frozen near the back of the room, one hand gripping the edge of the table. Around them, senior executives exchanged confused glances, trying to understand why the newly revealed Chairwoman of Crownridge Holdings was staring directly at one of the strategy managers as if they already shared a history.
Victoria took her seat at the head of the table.
She did not rush.
She did not raise her voice.
She simply opened the folder in front of her and said, “Please sit.”
Everyone obeyed.
Adrian did not.
His face had gone pale.
“Victoria…”
Several executives turned toward him.
Victoria looked up calmly.
“In this room, you will address me as Chairwoman.”
The words were soft, but they hit harder than a shout.
Adrian slowly sat down.
Margaret looked as though she might faint.
Victoria continued as if nothing unusual had happened.
“Today’s meeting concerns the restructuring of our strategic development division, several irregularities discovered during a compliance review, and the future of the Whitmore partnership.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
He had expected embarrassment.
He had expected anger.
He had not expected compliance.
Victoria turned to the chief legal officer seated beside her.
“Begin.”
A screen illuminated behind them.
Financial records appeared.
Emails.
Internal reports.
Expense claims.
Private communications.
Adrian’s heart sank.
The legal officer spoke.
“During a routine audit, we discovered that confidential information related to the Whitmore negotiations had been accessed outside approved channels. We also identified multiple attempts to use personal relationships with external stakeholders to influence internal promotion decisions.”
Margaret looked toward Adrian.
He stared at the screen.
Victoria remained perfectly still.
The legal officer continued.
“The activity originated from one employee account.”
A name appeared.
Adrian.
Whispers immediately spread across the room.
Adrian stood.
“This is ridiculous.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Sit down.”
“I can explain.”
“Then you will explain when you are asked.”
His jaw tightened.
“This is personal.”
Victoria leaned back slightly.
“No. What happened between us was personal.”
She pointed toward the screen.
“This is business.”
Adrian looked around the room.
He suddenly realized no one was on his side.
The regional president avoided his eyes.
The strategy director looked disgusted.
Margaret was barely breathing.
Victoria continued.
“You used internal information to impress the daughter of an investor whose family was negotiating with this company.”
“That’s not what happened.”
“You told her you had influence over the deal.”
“I was trying to build a relationship.”
