Steak with Mushroom Sauce and Mashed Potatoes

🧄 Ingredients

🔥 For the Steak:

  • 4 beef steaks (sirloin, ribeye, or your preferred cut)

  • Salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

🍄 For the Mushroom Sauce:

  • 200 g (7 oz) fresh mushrooms, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup heavy cream (or cooking cream)

  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped

  • 1 garlic clove, minced

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • A pinch of ground nutmeg (optional, adds depth)

🥔 For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and boiled until soft

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1/2 cup hot milk (adjust for creaminess)

  • Salt to taste


👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Make the Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Once the potatoes are tender, drain and mash them using a potato masher or fork.

  2. Add the butter and hot milk gradually while mixing to achieve a smooth consistency.

  3. Season with salt to taste. Cover to keep warm.

2. Cook the Steak:

  1. Season the steaks on both sides with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

  2. Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the olive oil and butter.

  3. Once hot, sear the steaks for 3–4 minutes per side, or until cooked to your desired doneness.

  4. Remove from the pan and let them rest while you prepare the sauce.

3. Prepare the Mushroom Sauce:

  1. In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed and sauté the onion until translucent.

  2. Add the garlic and mushrooms. Cook for 5–6 minutes until mushrooms are browned and tender.

  3. Pour in the cream, stir well, and simmer for 3–4 minutes until slightly thickened.

  4. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg if using.

4. Serve:

  • Plate each steak with a generous scoop of mashed potatoes.

  • Spoon the creamy mushroom sauce over the steak.

  • Optional: garnish with chopped parsley or a drizzle of olive oil.


💡 Tips:

  • Use Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes for a creamy mash.

  • For a richer flavor, substitute part of the milk with cream in the mashed potatoes.

  • Add a splash of white wine to the mushroom sauce for extra aroma.
