Neighbor Steals Assigned Parking Spot from Tired Resident
Chapter 1
The concrete underground parking garage of Oakridge Apartments was freezing, dimly lit, and filled with the low, reverberating roar of rain pouring onto the asphalt outside. It was 8:30 PM on a gloomy Tuesday. After a brutal 10-hour shift at his mid-level graphic design firm followed by an hour stuck in gridlocked bumper-to-bumper traffic, 28-year-old Mark was running on pure exhaustion. All he wanted to do was park his humble, ten-year-old silver sedan, take the elevator upstairs, and collapse onto his couch.
Every month, Mark paid a steep, non-negotiable $150 out of his modest paycheck specifically to reserve Space #45. It was a prime parking spot located directly adjacent to the main elevator lobby, clearly painted with bright yellow stencil letters that read: RESERVED – SPOT 45 – PAID RESIDENT ONLY.
As Mark rounded the final ramp into the garage, his headlights cut through the gloom—and his heart sank.
Parked blatantly across Space #45, sitting crookedly over the painted yellow lines and taking up part of the walking lane, was a massive, pristine white luxury SUV.
Mark let out a heavy sigh, resting his forehead against the steering wheel for a brief moment. Trying to stay patient, he pulled his sedan up behind the oversized vehicle, left his lights on, and gave two short, soft taps on his horn, hoping the driver was just making a quick drop-off.
A moment later, the heavy metal doors of the elevator lobby chimed open.
Out stepped Karen, dragging her feet in high-heeled boots. She was holding three heavy designer grocery bags in one hand and a giant plastic cup of iced coffee in the other. She wore a glowing neon-pink raincoat, dark oversized sunglasses indoors, and thick gold bangles that clanked together loudly with every movement.
Mark rolled down his driver’s side window as she approached the back of her SUV.
"Excuse me, ma'am!" Mark called out politely over the hum of his engine. "You're parked in Space #45. It's an assigned paid spot, and I need to park my car."
Karen didn't even slow her stride. She popped the trunk of her SUV with her key fob, carelessly tossed her heavy grocery bags inside, and turned around to glare at Mark with deep, visible annoyance.
"Oh, relax!" Karen snapped loudly, waving her manicured hand dismissively toward him as if shooing an annoying insect. "I was just unloading my groceries! I've been running errands in the pouring rain all day, and I needed to be close to the elevator."
"I understand," Mark said, keeping his tone calm despite his exhaustion. "But there are open visitor spots on the lower level. I pay a monthly fee specifically for this spot."
Karen sneered, stepping closer and scanning Mark's dented older sedan with utter contempt.
"Listen to me, kid," Karen barked, her voice echoing off the concrete pillars. "You can easily go park out on the street or down on Level 3. You're young, you have working legs—you can walk! I am not moving my brand-new vehicle back into the rain just so your beat-up junker can sit right next to the doors."
Mark shifted his sedan into park, pulled the handbrake, and unbuckled his seatbelt. The sheer absurdity of her response burned through his fatigue. He stepped out of his car onto the cold, damp concrete, holding his smartphone in his hand.
"Ma'am, it’s not about how far I can walk," Mark said, his voice firm and steady. "It’s about the lease contract I sign every year. If you refuse to move your SUV out of my assigned space right now, I’m going upstairs to get the building supervisor and call a tow truck."
Karen’s face flushed a blotchy, violent crimson beneath her heavy foundation. Her eyes bulged behind her dark sunglasses, and she took two aggressive steps directly into Mark’s personal space, thrusting her giant plastic cup of iced coffee inches from his nose.
"Are you threatening me?!" Karen shrieked, her piercing voice echoing loudly off the low concrete ceiling and concrete pillars. "Who do you think you are, you little nobody?! My husband and I pay top-tier rent for a luxury corner unit! I’ve lived in this building for six months, and I don't take orders from some budget-living child in a dented car!"
"It’s an assigned number painted on the floor," Mark repeated calmly, pointing down at the yellow stencil right between her SUV’s front tires. "This is Space #45."
In a fit of petty, unhinged rage, Karen reached into her raincoat pocket, pulled out a heavy metal keyring stacked with brass keys, and stepped toward the driver's side door of Mark's silver sedan.
Before Mark could react, she pressed the jagged edge of a heavy house key deep into the driver's door panel and violently dragged it from the front fender all the way to the rear tail light.
SCREEECH!
The horrific sound of metal tearing through paint reverberated through the quiet garage, leaving a deep, white, ruined gouge straight across Mark's car.
"There! Now your pathetic piece of junk matches your attitude!" Karen sneered, a cruel smirk spreading across her face.
Mark gasped in sheer disbelief, his mouth falling open as he looked at the ruined paintwork. Instinctively, he raised his smartphone to take a photo of the freshly gouged metal and her license plate.
The moment Karen saw the camera lens pointed at her, her eyes widened in manic panic. She lunged forward with both hands, aggressively slapping Mark's wrist with all her strength. His phone flew out of his grip, tumbling across the hard concrete floor with a sickening CRACK! as the front glass shattered into a web of spiderweb fractures.
