Apex Rivals: The Asphalt Crown
Chapter 1
The midnight air over the abandoned industrial pass was thick with the sharp stench of high-octane fuel and burning rubber. The stretch of highway known as "The Needle" had claimed dozens of bikes over the years—a treacherous four-mile descent filled with blind hairpin turns, cliffside drops, and zero room for error.
Tonight, it was the battleground for absolute control.
On the south side of the starting line sat the Phantom Riders, a legendary crew known for their disciplined street racing, led by Kaelen "Viper" Drake. Kaelen sat crouched over his modified black Suzuki Hayabusa, the engine humming like a restrained predator. Beside him stood his crew, their faces tense under the harsh glare of makeshift floodlights.
On the north side were the Iron Vipers, a ruthless, lawless gang led by Jaxon "The Axe" Stone. Jaxon revved his roaring 1200cc customized Ducati, a grin spreading across his scarred face. His gang members cheered loudly, banging on oil drums and waving iron chains.
"Winner takes the territory," Jaxon sneered, spitting onto the asphalt as he pulled his helmet down. "Loser hangs up their leather and walks out of this state forever. No rules, Kaelen. Just speed."
Kaelen didn't answer. He adjusted his gloves, his dark eyes locked straight onto the pitch-black highway stretching out into the canyon. He knew Jaxon played dirty—oil slick drops, side-swiping, spike chains—nothing was off-limits for the Iron Vipers. But Kaelen was racing for more than just territory; he was racing to protect his crew's home.
A young woman walked into the middle of the road between the two idling machines, holding a red flare high above her head.
The deafening roar of both engines drowned out the howl of the night wind. RPM gauges redlined. Exhaust pipes spat flames into the dark.

The flare dropped, sparking against the asphalt.
Both bikes launched forward like missiles, leaving thick black trails of burning rubber behind them. Within two seconds, they hit 100 miles per hour, shoulder-to-shoulder, hurtling into the pitch-black abyss of The Needle.
As they approached the first brutal blind turn overlooking a three-hundred-foot drop, Jaxon suddenly veered his heavy Ducati directly toward Kaelen's side, aiming to crush his front wheel and throw him off the cliff face—
Metal scraped against metal with a shower of orange sparks. Jaxon’s heavy Ducati slammed viciously into Kaelen’s side, the sheer impact sending a violent shudder through Kaelen’s handlebars. The cliffside wall loomed just inches from Kaelen's left knee—one wrong move, and he’d be tossed over the jagged rocks three hundred feet below.
"Get out of my way, Drake!" Jaxon roared through his helmet visor, his front tire inching dangerously close to Kaelen's frame.
Kaelen gritted his teeth, his grip tightening on the throttle. Instead of panicking or slamming on the brakes, he leaned hard into the hit, counter-steering with precise control. He hit the apex of the turn at a lethal seventy miles per hour, his knee puck scraping the asphalt. The rear tire of his Hayabusa squirmed, searching for traction on the cold road, before biting down hard and shooting him out of the turn.
Kaelen surged ahead by half a bike length, the high-pitched scream of his inline-four engine tearing through the midnight silence.
Behind them, the distant headlights of their crews faded into the fog. Up ahead lay "The Devil's Elbow"—a double-apex chicane built around a blind rock formation where the road narrowed to barely a single lane wide.
Jaxon wasn't about to let Kaelen take the lead. Reaching down with his left hand, Jaxon pulled a lever attached to his rear frame. A small canisters ruptured, dumping a slick spray of black motor oil directly onto the asphalt behind him.
Kaelen’s front tire hit the oily patch instantly.
The Hayabusa went wild, the front end wobbling violently in a high-speed tank-slapper. Kaelen’s feet kicked off the pegs as he fought the terrifying loss of control, his heart pounding against his ribs like a sledgehammer. With sheer instinct honed from years of track racing, Kaelen feather-touched the rear brake, stood the bike upright for a fraction of a second to regain traction, and saved the bike from sliding out at 120 mph.
Jaxon cackled into his radio headset, pulling ahead into the chicane. "You're done, Phantom!"
Kaelen regained his footing, his eyes burning with intense focus through his tinted visor. Jaxon had played his dirtiest trick, but he had left the inside line exposed heading into the final, deadly stretch of the pass: "The Dead Man's Drop"—a straight downward slope leading to the narrow bridge over the river.
Kaelen tucked his head low behind the windscreen, clicking up into fifth gear. The needle on his speedometer swept past 160... 170... 180 mph.
He was no longer just racing Jaxon. He was racing death itself.
The roar of twin engines ripped through the valley like a localized earthquake. The speedometer was a blur of digital numbers—175... 182... 190 miles per hour. Wind battered Kaelen’s helmet, pressing the visor against his nose as the landscape turned into a smear of black asphalt and jagged grey cliffs.
Ahead loomed "The Dead Man's Drop"—a steep, two-mile incline plunging straight toward the narrow, rust-eaten iron bridge over the Blackwood Gorge. The bridge was barely wide enough for a single pickup truck, let alone two heavily modified superbikes barreling down at near-terminal velocity.
Jaxon held the center of the road, his Ducati spouting backfire sparks like a war machine. He glanced in his rearview mirror and his eyes widened beneath his helmet. Kaelen wasn't pulling back. In fact, the black Hayabusa was closing the gap with terrifying speed, slipstreamed directly behind him.
"You want to play chicken at two hundred miles an hour, Drake?" Jaxon muttered, a manic grin splitting his face. He reached down to his handlebar and flipped a guarded toggle switch.
A jet of nitrous oxide shot into his Ducati’s intake. The bike surged forward with a violent burst of speed, throwing a cloud of unburnt fuel smoke behind him. Jaxon aimed his rear wheel right at the narrow entrance of the iron bridge, locking down the racing line.
Kaelen saw the nitrous purge. He knew if Jaxon hit the bridge first, it was over. There was no room to pass once inside the rusted iron superstructure.
Kaelen made a crazy, split-second decision.
