The rhythmic CLACK of a half-inch socket wrench echoed off the high corrugated tin ceiling of Midnight Iron Customs. The air inside the garage was thick with the familiar, rich aroma of dark roast coffee, unburnt high-octane gasoline, and heavy engine oil.

The owner, Marcus "Grizzly" Cole, leaned over the lifted frame of a classic custom build. In his late forties, Marcus was a towering Black man built like an anvil—broad-shouldered, with silver-streaked stubble framing a scarred jawline and dark, penetrating eyes behind a pair of wire-rimmed reading glasses. A decorated war veteran and former outlaw biker, Marcus was known across three states as the undisputed master of vintage V-Twins.

Without warning, the garage's heavy rolling steel door was shoved open with a deafening SLAM.

Two state troopers stepped into the workshop. Leading the way was Officer Sterling—a tall, sneering man in his late thirties with a pompous stride, his hand resting casually over the leather holster at his hip. Trailing behind him was Officer Hayes, a younger rookie who looked noticeably uncomfortable being there.

Sterling took a slow, theatrical walk around the bay, casting a dismissive eye over the row of high-end custom Harleys before bringing his icy gaze to rest on Marcus.

"Well, well... look what we have here," Sterling drawled, his tone laced with heavy condescension. "Marcus Cole. How does a guy like you end up running a high-end joint like this? Out on parole, or are you running stolen parts through these frames?"

Marcus slowly placed his socket wrench down on a clean shop rag, wiped the dark grease from his thick knuckles, and looked up. His face remained as unreadable as polished stone.

"I pay my taxes and I keep my doors open, Officer," Marcus replied, his deep, gravelly voice calm and measured. "If you're here to get your patrol cruiser serviced, you'll have to take a number and wait outside. If you're here for anything else... I'm busy working."

Officer Sterling snorted, taking two heavy steps deeper into the shop bay. He stopped right beside a pristine, ultra-rare 1947 Harley-Davidson Knucklehead mounted on a hydraulic lift—a museum-worthy masterpiece Marcus had spent six painstaking months restoring.

Sterling lifted his heavy leather patrol boot and slammed the steel-toed sole directly against the chrome exhaust pipe, leaving a scuffed black smear across the mirror finish.

"I hear there's been a rash of stolen bikes reported over in the next county," Sterling sneered, leaning over the motorcycle toward Marcus. "And frankly, Cole, I don't like your smug, quiet attitude. Hands behind your back. We're going to do a little unannounced inspection of this 'business' of yours."

Behind him, Officer Hayes cleared his throat nervously. "Officer Sterling... we don't have a warrant for a search of the premises..."

"Shut your mouth, Hayes!" Sterling snapped without turning around. He glared back at Marcus, his knuckles turning white as his hand gripped the butt of his sidearm. "I am the warrant in this town. I'm giving you three seconds to pull out your ID and open up your back storage rooms, Cole, or I'm cuffing you right now for resisting a police officer."

The air in the garage turned to ice. The heavy silence was broken only by the quiet drip of oil into a metal pan.

Marcus looked down at the black scuff mark on his hand-polished chrome, then slowly looked up into Sterling's arrogant eyes. He didn't flinch. He didn't raise his hands. Instead, he let out a long, slow sigh and reached his right hand toward the back pocket of his heavy canvas work pants.

Sterling's eyes flared with aggressive excitement, his hand unclipping the retention strap on his holster. "Don't make a stupid move, Cole..."

Marcus didn't pull out a weapon or a wallet.

The phone chimed twice on speaker before a booming, authoritative voice cut through the static, echoing loudly off the metal walls of the shop.
